Prepare for the Outdoors Program

The "Prepare for the Outdoors" climbing program was created to help climbers build confidence and develop essential outdoor climbing skills, using Steelworkers Park as the training site. Over four weekends, participants took part in three-hour sessions where they learned key techniques such as:

  • Lead climbing

  • Lead belaying

  • Setting anchors

  • Cleaning routes

  • Rappelling.

In partnership with the Chicago Park District, this program provided hands-on experience in a real outdoor environment. Guided by experienced instructors, participants gained practical knowledge in skills needed for outdoor climbing, making it a great way to move from gym climbing to the challenges of climbing outside.

This program was made possible thanks to funding from the Chicago Community Trust, which helped bring this opportunity to the community.

Week 1

Our first week was an opportunity to assess each participant's skill level and confidence in climbing. We introduced the fundamentals of lead climbing and provided hands-on experience with mock leading and mock belaying, all while enjoying the beautiful sunshine. Our primary focus was on helping everyone build confidence and proficiency in outdoor climbing, laying a strong foundation for the skills we will continue to develop in the upcoming weeks.

Week 2

Building on the foundation from the first week, session two focused on refining mock belays and lead climbs, helping participants further develop their skills and confidence.

The highlight of the day was facing one of the most challenging aspects of lead climbing— falling. With the safety of top rope backups, each participant practiced controlled falls, gradually building trust in themselves and the process. Everyone was given a quad that they will use to start building anchor’s in week 3

Week 4

The final week was an culmination of the skills we developed throughout the program. Participants practiced leading, belaying, setting anchors, and cleaning without a top-rope backup, all under the close supervision of our instructors. As everyone was progressing exceptionally well, we were thrilled to add an extra element to the day: learning how to rappel. This hands-on experience allowed participants to confidently apply their skills in a real outdoor setting, reinforcing their abilities and preparing them for future climbing adventures.

We hope we get the opportunity to offer these workshops again in the near future
