Prepare for the Outdoors

This program will teach you the skills and knowledge needed to set up outdoor climbing routes, how to keep yourself and others safe, and how to manage climbing equipment. Stipend included!

  • Schedule: Saturdays 1-4PM on August 31st to September 21st

    • Must attend all four sessions to be eligible for the stipend.

  • Location: Steelworkers Park - E 87th St at Lake Michigan, Chicago, IL 60617

Key Skills Taught:

  • Risk management

  • Setting up top-rope anchors

  • Top rope belaying

  • Lead climbing (including controlled falls)

  • Lead belaying

  • Anchor cleaning

  • Rappelling

  • Rope Management

Eligibility

This program is for those aged 13+ with priority given to teens

Equipment

Participants are encouraged to have their own harness and climbing shoes although these can be provided upon request.

Belay devices, ropes, climbing hardware, personal anchor systems and helmets will be provided.

Prerequisites

It is strongly preferred that participants have climbing experience and are top rope certified at one of the Chicago area climbing gyms Comfortably climb 5.8 on top rope

Application Deadline

Applications must be submitted by August 10th. Successful applicants will be confirmed on August 17th.
